Everyone does this, in some way. A Session Zero should include talking about how much detail players want to put into their characters, and how much the GM will be able to incorporate into the game. Some of my favorite questions or prompts are below.

  • Nobody's alone. You've got family, friends, a guild, something. Some person that's important to you. Even if they seem unimportant, if your cobbler is the only person that you know and trade words with, then that cobbler is the most important person in the world to you. Who is it, or who are they?

  • What is the worst or best moment of your life? How did that scene play out, in short?

  • Which other PC was there with you when it happened? Were they your ally, enemy, or acquaintance?

  • What is your moral line in the sand? Why?

  • Of what action, habit, or thing are you most ashamed/what do you most regret?

  • What things are you bad at, and why? What have you become good at, and why those?
