The goal of alchemy has been, at its core, eternal life ever since the practice was founded. Rather than seeking some arbitrary infinite a small group if alchemists determined they could defeat death simply by not allowing life to stop.

They crafted pumps to move the blood, galvanic reinforcements to fire the nerves, cultivated self-repairing tissues and organs, all attached to power sources of vast capacity. Essentially all the living parts prone to failure are replaced or reinforced.

This results in an alchemical version of a cyber-zombie. It ain't good.
